We would like to call your attention to the small table with the black POW/MIA flag.
This table is our way of symbolizing the fact
that members of our profession of arms are missing from our midst. They are commonly called Prisoners of War/Missing In Action. We
call them Brothers.
They are unable to be with us tonight and so we proudly remember them. This table, set for one, is a symbol of
the tables in thousands of homes across our Country with chairs that have remained empty for many years.
The tablecloth is white, symbolizing
the purity of their intention to respond to their Country’s call to arms.
The red rose reminds us of the families and loved ones of
our comrades who keep the faith awaiting their return.
A slice of lemon is on the bread plate, symbolic of the bitterness of their
fate. Grains of salt upon the dinner plate symbolize the tears shed by their families in their memory.
The inverted glass serves as
a reminder of their inability to drink with us tonight and to share the taste of freedom.
The candle on the table is a beacon in the
darkness to guide them back to the Country for which they so gallantly and bravely served.
The chair is empty. They are not here .............
them, all of you who served with them and called them comrades, who depended upon their might and aid and relied upon them, for surely
they have not forsaken you. May they never be forgotten and may they always hold a special place in our hearts and be a part of our
daily lives and prayers.
